5 Tips to making You a Priority

Do you feel like life is spinning out of control? There is so much to do, and so much not done and your tank feels empty. Then in the middle of it someone with the best of intentions, mentions to you that you need to take care of yourself.

I have been there, and I don’t know about you, but I felt like screaming in their face “and when am I going to find time to do that!!!”

Self-care is often the last thing on our minds when we are careering through a busy day. And you are going to probably growl at me for saying this, but that well-meaning friend is right. When are you going to take care of you?

But I also want to say to you, I get it! Life and the needs and demands of everyone else can become so all-consuming that we are left exhausted. And then when someone starts telling me that I MUST do something, I feel backed into a corner with no way out.

Self-care is a choice; if you want to take time for yourself, then the first step is to look at self-care through a different lens.

Here are 5 tips that might help you begin your journey to making self-care a priority in your life:

1. Have a good understanding of what self care is...

Before travelling the self-care path, it can be helpful to understand what it is. So many people think of bubble baths, and massages, however, there is more to self-care than that. The dictionary defines it as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health: the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” It is the things you do to take care of you and not anyone else, and it’s not a one size fits all. It could be going to the Dr, getting a massage, exercising, doing a hobby, saying no, the list is endless.

2. Recognise the benefits of self care...

Now you know what it is, why do it? Isn’t it more important to get all those things done on your to-do list? The reality is that there are numerous benefits to self-care, and those benefits can actually increase your productivity and improve your health. Next week I’ll be taking a deeper dive into the many benefits of self-care, so stay tuned.

3. Make self care a priority...

Are you someone who makes most of the appointments they have scheduled. I always turn up for my doctor or dentist appointments or when our girls were younger a meeting at their school?

How do I make it to those appointments? One, because I see them as a priority, and two, I set an appointment and schedule it in my diary.

Once you decide it’s important, make a date with yourself for self-care, and schedule it in your diary.

4. Start small...

Be kind to yourself and start small, chances are self-care hasn’t been a priority for you for a while. We need to build our self-care muscle and just like any new exercise, it takes time and practice. If today is your first day of prioritising self-care, keep it simple, even if it’s only 15 minutes and as you build muscle you can increase the time.

5. Create good boundaries...

As with anything there will always be competing priorities. Good boundaries will help to keep the importance of your self-care activities on your radar. Place self-care at the top of the list, not at the bottom when everything else is done. It’s okay to say no, especially if you are looking after yourself.

Weigh up the benefits of taking or not taking time for yourself and remember if you don’t take the time to recharge you, who is going to be doing all those other things that are currently taking up the majority of your time?

Good self-care that suits you can change your life. However, it does take a bit of discipline to stay on track, so you can reap the benefits.

If you find yourself finding it difficult to keep on track, or maybe you don’t know where to begin, drop me a line. We can schedule an appointment to have a chat.

What are you waiting for, the world is your oyster!
