6 Tips to Plan for Success in 2023

It’s that time of year again when you pull out the beautiful new planner you have purchased. You grab your favourite pen, sit down and start deciding what you want to do and achieve in the coming year. It’s a scene that you play out each year. The crispness of the clean pages and the thought of what you will do this year excite you.

And then the doubts start to creep in. You look at last year’s planning and realise that you didn’t achieve the things you wanted?

You realise you have set these goals before; however, you are still not kicking them.

The doubt begins to set in, you start thinking what’s the point, I just fail miserably at them anyway?

I want to help you make this year different, help you to break the cycle, and here are 6 tips to help get you started:

1. Assess and reflect on past success

Are you finding yourself failing to achieve the goals you set each year?  Do you continually set the same goals and are not achieving them? I want to encourage you to see failure as a positive thing. Failure is a First Attempt In Learning (FAIL).

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Anon

If you want a different outcome, consider adapting what you have been doing. Have a think about what you can you learn from past experiences, and what could you do differently this time.

2. Know your why

Knowing what is driving you to achieve a goal can help with success.

Ask yourself how important achieving this goal is to you on a scale of 1 (not important) to 10 (really important). If you score low, ask yourself if the goal is really important to you. Maybe it’s not as important as you thought. Refine the goal to something that scores higher and is more important.

3. Get an accountability partner

Tell someone what you are planning to do and find yourself an accountability partner. By telling someone you are making the idea of what you are going to do real. Now you also have someone else invested in what you are doing. You could even decide to ask them to help you by checking in with you weekly or fortnightly to see how you are going.

4. Micro goals

Recognise that nested within each larger goal, there may be multiple micro goals. Micro goals are the small goals or steps that need to be achieved to move on to the next step. Remember to focus on these smaller goals and see them as wins, they are the rungs on the ladder you climb to get to your bigger goal.

5. Make your dream real

It’s vital that you can imagine that you are already achieving your goal. Close your eyes and visualise yourself already doing it, write it down, and place it where you can see it. Believe that you can do it. You want your goal to be in the forefront of your mind, not buried in your brain where you might forget it. Knowing that you will do it, can get you on the road to achieving it. Every goal starts as an idea, it’s time to turn your thoughts into reality.

6. Be kind to yourself

If you set yourself a task, for example, “I am going to exercise every day”, and you don’t do it one day, just do it the next. Not doing it one day will not stop you from achieving your goal. What will stop you is not starting again. Reframe failure as a positive experience, learn by reflecting on what happened and what you could do differently next time. Recognise and celebrate your wins no matter how small.
These are a few steps to get you started. In the age of social media, it is so easy to see the story that someone is sharing and see it as their reality, it may only be part of their story. I want to encourage you to see this as your personal process and not to measure your success against someone else’s.

And finally, while I may be a coach, and have spent a lot of time investing in my self-development, it doesn’t mean that I don’t have challenges in my life at times too. We all do! For the past few years, I have stopped writing, it’s something I love doing and feeds my soul, but daily writing is back on my radar and a goal that I want to achieve.
